For our Seniors, on National Senior Citizens Day

Today is National Senior Citizens Day, and although we love and honor the older members of our society every single day, it is the perfect opportunity to reflect on all their wonderful contributions to our society, as well as advocate for their rights. Senior Citizens Day came about thanks to former president Ronald Reagan, who declared August 21st as an observance day for seniors back in 1988. On this day there are a variety of community events happening at local nursing homes and neighborhoods to support and celebrate our seniors. Businesses also join in and give these respected members of our society some well deserved discounts and coupons. Businesses such as Bed Bath and Beyond, Ben & Jerry’s Here’s, and Banana Republic offer discounts for seniors in Boston, here’s a complete list with all the opportunities for senior deals around the city. Even though a lot of them are not in the workforce any more, the senior population is one the most active when it comes to volunteering and they often donate to charity. They are key boosters of our economy and the demographic with the biggest voter percentage. There are volunteering organizations just for seniors like Foster Grandparents where older citizens can lend a helping hand by mentoring youth, or The Senior Companion Program where seniors can help other seniors who are homebound or frail. At IBA we value and cherish our seniors, who are part of our Resident Services Program in which we provide them with opportunities to lead active and fulfilling lives. Using a culturally responsive approach, our caring and bilingual team helps residents: meet their basic needs through advocacy, case management and referrals, keep active and connected to the community through social, recreational, and cultural programming, and boost their health and wellness through fitness/exercise classes, workshops and health screenings. seniorsiba We celebrate Senior’s Day every day, but what better way to observe this important date than by contributing to their quality of life? If you’d like to donate and help us keep on taking care of our senior citizens, visit: ibaboston.org/donate We encourage everyone to spread the word about this day by asking and listening to their stories, sharing them on social media and paying special attention to these inspiring and wise members of our society.
