This year, Festival Betances is: Festival Betances 2024 – Un Verano en Betances

Featuring top Puerto Rican and Latinx artists along with family-friendly events, including: a parade, traditional cuisine, arts and crafts, children’s activities like face painting and inflatables, and other treats that highlight the diversity of Latinx culture.

We expect to once again bring together a multicultural audience that is 3,000+ strong!

About Festival Betances

Festival Betances is a staple in New England’s Latinx community and the Boston summer festival season. Every year, the in-person event has drawn a multicultural audience of 3,000+ people.

Through the years, Betances’ stage has seen many musical and dance performances, ranging from local and regional acts to international Latinx music icons such as Larry Harlow from Fania All Stars, Tony Vega, and Tito Rojas. The festival is named after Ramón Emeterio Betances, a Puerto Rican patriot whose medical contributions benefited Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. He also became a leader in awakening national consciousness in Puerto Rico, and is considered one of the foremost intellectuals of the 19th century.

What is Festival Betances?

IBA’s Festival Betances is the oldest and largest Latinx music and arts celebration in New England. Each year, Festival Betances features a performance lineup of top Puerto Rican and Latinx artists alongside family-friendly events such as a parade, traditional cuisine, arts and crafts, children’s activities like face painting and inflatables, and other treats that highlight the diversity of Latinx culture.

When and where does Festival Betances take place?

Saturday, July 20th, 2024 at IBA’s Plaza Betances in the South End.

Who attends Festival Betances?

IBA’s Festival Betances primarily serves the over 1,200 low-income, BIPOC residents of IBA’s affordable housing community. Participants vary in age from children to senior citizens. Festival Betances also engages the larger New England Latinx community and non-Latinxs who are diverse by age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status. It is essential to IBA that all Festival Betances events are accessible and relevant to the Latinx heritage of the surrounding affordable housing community. As such, all Festival Betances events are bilingual (Spanish/English) and free to the public, removing linguistic, cultural, and economic barriers to arts experiences and education.
